Is it a four or two cycle detroit. We just bought one of those four cycle detroits. They apperently had a problem blowing the head gaskets, but the prevous owners of the truck installed bigger head bolts and a heavier gasket (I think). The one we bought was an '83 ford with a little over 100,000 miles on it. We paid $3,000 for it since no one seems to like the engine eventhough the truck is in perfect shape. It has some "blow-bye" but other than that, it seems like a good engine. I don't know much about the engine, but I heard they are like V8 Cats, which aren't very reliable. The only reason we bought it was the truck itself was worth $3,000. It really depends on what you plan to use the truck for, wheather it is for heavy work or do you plan to use it as something like a tool truck. One other thing: Are you shure it doesn't have a turbo? We didn't know ours had one at first since they are almost behind the engine. If it doesn't have one, the chances of having problems with the head gasket might not be as great. The thing you need to ask is why are they selling it? Good luck.
