My initial thoughts are the same as bbott’s. I would ask the older fellow what he used and stay with what has worked. A couple of questions that come to mind are 1. How many times a year will you be mowing this? 2. Do you really want an antique tractor or do you want the safest most time efficient way to mow all these steep acres. Many of the modern mowers such as the Zero Turning Radius mowers are built with their center of gravity very close to the ground. Many people in my area are rapidly abandoning their small tractors with belly mowers and rear-mounted finishing mowers especially where there are many trees to mow around. As far as crawlers go we should not forget the old two cylinder John Deeres. Many of the posts in the crawler section talk about the difficulty and expense of maintaining an older crawler.
