I believe the main problem would be the generator's field winding. It would have a reluctance designed for 6 volts. In other words if you applied 12 volts to it, it would draw twice as much current and probably burn out. I don't think the regulator could compensate for the increased field current. But until the field did burn out, the generator would really put out. This problem might be overcome with a heafty resistor (maybe 50 watts or so) so that the field still got only 6 volts. As another idea I would think only the field needs to be rewound for 12 volts. Since they come out of the generator with a couple large screws, I would almost think a person could rewind them himself using the same wire and length as a 12 volt generator.
