: My Ford 801 is running too rich fuel mixture. The exhuast is a bit on the black side and so are the plugs. The carb is a Marvel Schesler. I see two adjustments on it, one up on top of carb and the other on bottom of fuel bowl. Both are set at about 1 1/2 turns from seat.I've tried adjusting several turns, but it still runs rich. Should I go to a smaller jet or can something else be done to lean out? Fix the float valve. Its probably leaking from wear. Replace needle and seat. Maybe the float has sunk because it has a hole in it. Then check the float level according to the manual. Clean the air intake, remove all the birds nests and mud dauber nests. Replace the dry type air filter or clean the oil bath air cleaner. In many carburetors the idle adjustment is an air adjustment so screwing it back out leans, while the high speed adjustment is fuel and turning it in leans. You have no chance of adjusting the high speed jet at idle speed and no chance of adjusting the idle mixture at high speeds. Gerald
