My 66 X-6 was black.
In the mid 60s, most of us kids had 50 or 60cc bikes. Those with 160cc Hondas led the pack. 305cc Super Hawks were few and far between. All had 3 or 4 speed transmissions.
The X-6 Hustler changed everything. Twenty nine HP and a 6 speed transmission to keep the engine "on the cam."
After 1/4 mile I could hardly find the Super Hawks in the rear view mirrors. I could pull a big hole shot on a HD Sportster and stay ahead well beyond 60 MPH. Pulled the run of the mill 383 Torque Flite Road runner to 80+ MPH or so, all with a 16 year old kid aboard holding the throttle open and rowing the shifter.
Later, I bored it out, installed 2 ring Wiesco pistons, ported and polished the ports, milled the heads, and bored the carburetors 2mm. It would now wind to 11,000 RPM or so and probably made around 35 HP but, with 2 aboard, I might need to wind it to 6,000 RPM to pull away from the curb if on an incline. Shut down more than my share of tri-power GTOs stop lite to stop lite.
The "first crotch rocket" ruled the road for a couple of years until the Kawasaki 500cc triple again changed the rules in 1969. I visited a dealer to test ride one shortly after they came out. Though well experienced with my X-6, I was astonished, and even at 19 or so decided that I would likely kill myself if I had one.
