: My Ford 801 is running too rich fuel mixture. The exhuast is a bit on the black side and so are the plugs. The carb is a Marvel Schesler. I see two adjustments on it, one up on top of carb and the other on bottom of fuel bowl. Both are set at about 1 1/2 turns from seat.I've tried adjusting several turns, but it still runs rich. Should I go to a smaller jet or can something else be done to lean out? I agree with Gerald about checking your float and needle valve/seat. Also, you may find that, due to wear or damage, you will get your best idle with the idle mixture screw almost all the way in (say 1/4 to 1/2 turn open). My Ford 800 idles best at 1/4 turn open.
