A 20 pound tank holds 4.2 gallons usable.you can squeeze almost 5 in there,BUT,if you tip that tank one iota it will put liquid in the regulator,lines,etc.whether it is against the law or not,it is not a viable thing to do.A 100 pounder holds 22 gallons.Generally those are not filled by weight,they are filled by opening the bleeder,and when liquid comes out they are full.Tare weights are pretty standard now,and a lot of guys just throw them on a scale and don't look at the tare first.I have four rough usage tanks that tare in at double the weight of a regular gas grille tank,although they look the same.
