I don't want to sound like a smart butt here, as I doubt what I'm saying applies to anyone on this board, but as a mechanic who Has dealt with all kinds when it comes to repairs, I'll say this.
Looking from the tire shops perspective, had they taken the time to clean and paint the rim, etc, rather than just hit the high spots, and install a new tube, the average Joe would have raised Cain about the cost of the job. This is the way the typical customer now days acts. They want quick, and cheap, period, and to heck with it being done right. They don't understand that the extra spent getting it done right the first time beats what it'll take to do it twice..... because more often than not by the second time they have forgotten about the first time.
I see this all the time, and it bugs the crap out of me when I see it happening, especially when it's one of my customers demanding it. Thing is I realized long ago that, 'You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink'. So, I say my piece and let it drop. Like I said, having someone tell me not to do something 'right', etc etc because they don't want the extra expense or whatever, still bugs me. Even so, I'm not going to beg them to save their money, so I've had to consciously get the mindset that the fact they won't listen simply means they get to pay me twice...
Like I said, I'm not directing my comments at anyone on here, but simply giving the point of view that the typical repair shop ultimately has to take, as it applies to doing the tire as they did rather than doing it 'right' and charging the extra fee for the time it would have taken to do it....and then listening to the customer complain about how much a 'simple tire repair' cost them.

Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
