6 volt to 12 volt conversion ford 601

when converting from 6 volt to 12 volt, if I install a new 12 coil do I need to install a resistor before the points to protect them from burning up or will they be ok without. Also if i kept the 6 volt coil what size dropping resistor should i install before the coil. Thanks larry b.
