How to remove stumps

I got a little 21 hp Kubota with a woods 6' something backhoe. I am trying to remove stumps but the backhoe will not break any roots over about an inch. The tractor itself wouldn't pull the cap off a pop bottle. I dig a big hole halfway around one side and pull in the other direction with two 4000 pound come-alongs hooked to another stump. I still have to jump down in the hole and chop and dig. Then jump out and crank the come alongs for a while and jump back in. Is there any shortcuts? An old timer told me to split the stump as far down as possible and pull one half at a time. Has anyone tried that? Sonny
