Tetra-Ethyl-Lead was originally added to retard octane and prevent or lessen 'detonation' and pinging. Pinging is caused by the valves micro-welding themselves to the seats for a fraction of a second. Since the 'removal' of lead from most fuel, there have been many other addatives put into fuel for these same reasons. One of the biggest advancements in engine technology was the 'hardened insert' for the valve seats. IMHO...you don't 'need' any addatives whatsoever with modern fuels...
