I was looking for the same reasons, and what I decided on was perfect for what I need in a truck. 2016 F150 XL 4x4 2.7 eco-boost, regular cab, vinyl floor, (no dust holding carpet) with 6.5' box with the tie downs and a ford drop in bed liner because I like the added protection because it is corrugated.
I ditched the extended cab, don't need it. If I need to carry anything extra, just use one of those tri-fold covers. Myself and a friend made a trip to Kentucky in it, very comfortable, plenty room with the cover on. If I need more room, this truck has the towing package and it handles Sure-Trac single axle trailer, 5 x 12 or whatever that is, have towed both with substantial weight, one with a 10' disc harrow with 2 ford suitcase weights and the other with my log splitter and a bunch of tools/equipment to take care of a large storm clean up at our other place, (tornado damage). Perfect truck for this.
As a daily driver, I can park and maneuver it easily, fuel economy, always in the 22 MPG range, highway to KY was 23.9 with that cover on, much of the way. If I need longer bed capacity, just use a trailer, and that saves wear and tear and or risk to damaging the bed, why spend the money on a new truck just to abuse it, don't take much to keep them nice and drive daily. Worst case, then I just flop the tailgate down.
I won't knock the compact trucks by other manufacturers, personally, they just don't work, they don't have the capacity I need and interior room is that much smaller. This F150 as configured, covers all my needs, is a great daily driver, fuel efficient and can carry a real load if needed. Awhile back, one of the owners where I work was getting rid of 2 Miller bobcat type welders, could not get them running again or what happened I do not know. They are heavy and 1 in the bed of a Ranger as I recall was too much. The F150 carried 2 of them with ease. It was still a load, but it handles it. ALso rides nice for a truck, no it's not a car, but it rides very nice. We have a 2017 1 ton reg cab GMC at work, I like my F150 much better, the dash, the interior, so on.
Don't have to be a Ford, but a 1/2 ton regular cab with 6.5' box is a very handy truck in my opinion for the above reasons. I am going to upgrade, same truck, but think I'll ad the plow package since I am becoming a landlord, don't have time to play around for just my own snow removal. I could not be more satisfied and thankful for such a useful vehicle and I did not have a truck on the road for many years prior to and it had been over 20 years since I bought anything new, trying to save what I could where I could. I have no regrets, its a necessary vehicle at this point.

Today's Featured Article - Hydraulics - Cylinder Anatomy - by Curtis von Fange. Let’s make one more addition to our series on hydraulics. I’ve noticed a few questions in the comment section that could pertain to hydraulic cylinders so I thought we could take a short look at this real workhorse of the circuit. Cylinders are the reason for the hydraulic circuit. They take the fluid power delivered from the pump and magically change it into mechanical power. There are many types of cylinders that one might run across on a farm scenario. Each one could take a chapter in
