Dave, The big wire coming out the side of that GM alternator (Yes, they have internal regulators) is the output which leads to the ammeter (its the charging output to the battery via the ammeter). It should have two smaller wires plugged into the top marked 1 (R) Regulator, and 2 (F) Field. The big side wire connects somewhere to the Field, and the other one (R or 1) usually connects to the ignition switch such that it is only hot when the key or ignition is on.
