You have some good advise but I will add that it might help if you made a few test beads on similar thickness scrap before you try for the important one if you aren't familiar with how the welder and the welder will work out. If it looks like you don't have enough heat, (base metal not melting and welds look like little balls of metal not a smooth bead) then you might try pre heating the job if you have a way, even building a fire under it long as you clean off the smoke before welding. Especially if it is cold getting it up to even 100 or 150 degrees can help.
