Its cold and rainy in the Pacific NW in most years, and corn (for silage- no grain corn planted here) is not generally planted until mid-May. I remember one year a guy planted in early April, after a dry spell and the soil was workable. I saw the corn in late April, after the rains had started again- it was a couple inches tall, and more yellow than green. His neighbor planted in mid May, our normal time. By July you couldn't tell the difference between the two stands. Early planting was of no advantage, but he exposed himself to a late frost (which didn't happen, luckily for him). YRMV

There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard.
