Okay, so I converted a Cockshutt 30 from 6v gen to Delco 10si alternator some time back. It charged fine for a while, then we had an ice storm and the key switch ( common aftermarket type) got bunged up along with some wiring. We ended up with a short that would rain the battery down. So we would just unhook the pos batt terminal and all was well, until my boy unhooked it while the tractor was running and fried the alternator. I finally got around to trying to fix it the other day. Found the replacement key switch I had was bad out of the box, so I got another that tests good. I rebuilt the alternator too. I wired it up- batt stud on alt to ammeter to starter power post. Jumper from ammeter to batt post on key switch. Wire from Ignition post on switch to coil. I screwed up at one point and blew out the diode trio again (I assume) with wrong connections, nut I did have a near 20 amp charge indication until I tried to shut it off and took the battery out of the picture with the key switch- my bad. Fixed that brain fart and put in a new voltage reg and diode trio again. Here's the issue- I still get no charge indication and, more troubling, I get a 12v draw reading between the Pos terminal and Pos battery post with the key in the off position. I think this is wrong. I thought when the wire between the starter stud (battery) and alternator ran through the ammeter there should be no power draw or indication of 12v.
Sorry for the convoluted explanation, but I don't know how else to lay it out. I have followed the same instructions off this site for the conversion that I have used on 5 other conversions successfully. Should my alternator act as a ground? That's what it seems to be doing and that seems wrong to my thinking.
