Have you put a volt meter on it to see what the revved up voltage is across the battery?
That will tell if it is charging. The battery may be run down to 6v and still have enough to start and run with the 6v coil.
What do you want to do with the electrical? Keep it 6v or finish converting it to 12v?
If you are looking for dependability and economic fix, put a Delco 10SI one wire alternator on it, and add a 1 1/2 ohm resistor to the coil.
If you want 6v originality you'll need a battery and start working on the generator and regulator, which will be an ongoing task.
If the points have been running on 12v without a resistor, they are probably cooked. Take a look and check the gap, check the condition of the distributor shaft bushings and the advance mechanism. Be sure the cap is good, not carbon tracked between cylinders on the underside.
