To me cash forfeitable deposit and terms spelled out. I have been on the buying end of "hold it for me" and know that sometimes something pops up, totally unexpected and you have to grab it....procrastination means lost purchase...so I have asked for and have been lucky. I always tried to add a "carrot" to the offering to sweeten the deal which helps, and no haggling or lowballing....paying asked price.
If I am in the position to immediately come and make a deal, I have to "haggle" or no deal.....haggling is just part of it and the fun part.
Won't be too many years that I will start selling off what I have accumulated over 40+ years and I'm not sure how I'm going to manage that. Will worry about it when the time comes. Auction is possible to avoid all the low ballers and tie kickers, or call up the local used tractor dealer and he will pick it all up at half it's worth since he has to make a living and I understand that. Having done that in the past, what chaps me is that I stupidly think I am through with a piece of equipment and sell it to him for half price, usually my stuff is in top notch condition, and come back later needing one and have to go back to him and pay 2x and get ½ the implement.
