Use energy wisely, buy energy efficient products. Stop acting like its someone else's problem and yes, voting to elect scientifically literate people is a good way to get science-based laws and programs enacted.
Yes, we live in a fairly clean country (I think Antarctica is still the cleanest) because we stopped letting industries run rampant, dumping or spewing waste and destroying the landscape all in the name of more and more profits. All those efficiencies- from higher mileage to lower wattage were all claimed to be unattainable by the industries that produced those products and fought any standards written into laws. They now like to brag about how great and green their products are because they were forced by laws (and consumer demand) to make them so, not because they harboured any altruistic sense of community.
What I suggest is an accelerated pace to improve efficiency of energy producing and consuming industries. As fast and as far ranging as technology will permit. Its what companies that plan on surviving the next few decades are already doing.
