I live in a rural area of central NY which is slowly becoming a suburb of Syracuse. I am 2 miles from the interstate which gets me to downtown Syracuse in 10-15 minutes. It is nice to be near a lot of different suppliers of parts and materials but I kind of have the best of both worlds. For quite a while I travelled into the city for my off -farm job , and was glad when my job duties changed so that was not necessary as much . I think dealing with more traffic and inconsiderate/unskilled drivers is one of my biggest complaints when going into any metro area . As far as fixing tractors I think many of us have taken to ordering parts from places other than the local dealer because there are not many local dealers left, many of them dont support the older stuff without needing to order the parts themselves , and many brands that we use/repair that have faded away really have little dealer support (MM,MH, Oliver, Case, AC etc)
