We live about 45 minutes from downtown Detroit, yet there are plenty of working farms around us. We have plenty of neighbors, but with the trees around our house we seldom see them. It's nice, as you say, being close to the various businesses that support the huge SE Michigan manufacturing industry, although most of them don't want to bother with individuals. There are enough outfits who will sell to small customers that it's not difficult to get almost any kind of metal or oddball fastener you might need. For tractor parts, the nearby New Holland dealer is pretty good to deal with, and Steiner is only half an hour away.
Sorry, but there aren't many small towns that can match the entertainment available in a major metro area. Anything from standup comedy to opera is only a short drive away. And the local county fair is only a couple of miles from our house. Any kind of food imaginable is available, from barbecue to Ethiopian. All manner of museums. Plenty of sports venues if you're into that sort of stuff.
But the big differentiator as we get older, in my opinion, is the quality of health care in a metro area. When I had my heart attack last year, only about four hours elapsed between when I told my wife to take me to the hospital and when I was recuperating from the stent they put in. At two o'clock in the morning. You don't want to deal with that sort of medical emergency in most small towns. I grew up in one and saw what my dad and other family members went through with the local health care providers.
