I have several of these engines in tobacco harvesters and Hahn hiboy sprayers. They are definitely tough and easy to repair. On the last one I had rebuilt was in 2019 and major parts were available. It costed just north of $ 3500 parts and labor to have it bored and built first class. The early ones had poured rod bearings ($$$$) as where the later ones had replaceable shell inserts. The intake gasket set for some reason has been hard to obtain this year. Other than that, parts have been fairly easy to get if you know where to look. Not sure what you mean by it died, but I've had several head gaskets blow on ones that are ran hard and wide open all day in extreme heat and I'd thought it was trashed. Got new gaskets in them and head planed and was good to go. If it's burning a hole through a head, it's time to rebuild due to excessive oil burning.
