I purchased a 1999 1500 Silverado a year ago with 105,000 miles on it. I have only put 5,000 miles on it since I bought it, all trouble free. 5.3 engine, automatic transmission, electric controlled transfer case. Older person had it and had passed away, so I knew the history. Thanksgiving day while traveling to family, had cruise set at 60. It suddenly acted like it went in to neutral, engine raced and coasted to a stop. I stopped and checked trans fluid. It is kind of discolored, but I couldn't smell it being burned. After restarting, it would move a bit, allowing me to get off the road, then did the same thing stopped moving. Any ideas if the trans failed suddenly while traveling down the road? Possible the transfer case went in to a neutral position? I had it towed to our sons and that's where its currently at, 100 miles away. I need to decide where to go from here. The older owner did at one time tow a camper with it, but he hadn't for a few years prior to his passing away.

But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
