From the extensive research (watching Jay Lenno's Garage LOL), Stanley Steamers were the economy steamers, everything was manually operated and required a level of competence to operate one.
The upper end luxury models were more automated, safer for the average motorist to operate.
Lenno said the danger was not the boiler, but getting the fire started. He said they always push the car outside and have an extinguisher ready. They were known for failing to ignite, pooling and leaking fuel, and catching on fire!
