Working on servicing out this combine. Owner says they have never checked the oil in the planetaries on the rear axle hubs so he wants that done. Ive been through the operators manual front to back multiple times and I cant find any info on how to check the oil level or what grade of oil to run in them. There is only one page that even makes mention of the 4 wheel drive option and all it does is give the hydraulic schematic and an explanation of the valving. Tried the service department at the deere dealer and they were about as useful as a box of rocks. They did let me look through their copy of the tec manual and it had one whole 2 sentence bullet point that said to fill them to the top with hydro oil. Ok, what is considered top and what grade of hydro oil? So can anybody tell me what position the level check plug needs to be in and if they are supposed to run the same low viscosity hygaurd as the hydro or regular hygaurd or 80-90 or what? Its like Deere decided to offer this as an option then not tell anybody how to service it.

This story is about the day my Grandfather Brown (true name) decided along with my parents to purchase a new Ford tractor. It wasn't really new except to us. The year was about 1967 and my father found a good used Ford 601 tractor to use on the farm instead of "Bob", our old mule. Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
