Diesels had an exhaust that came up and out the (right) side of the hood. Gassers had an exhaust that came up and out the (left) side of the hood. Therefore, the hoods are different according to where the exhaust hole is at in the hood.
Diesels were also GAS start. Meaning that even though it was a diesel engine, they still had spark plugs, carburetor, and ignition system for the gas start. Fuel was switched to diesel once engine was warmed up on gas.
As for the numbers, I'll let someone else answere that. I don't have any books to make references to.
