Engine serial number started out being a 1948 W-6 engine gasoline fuel. Engine was early in year so may have a previous year letter on block. Look more to rear of where the serial number was between metal side cover and head. Unless they cut a hole and used the SMD hood the front bolster would need changed for a gas hood to fit, unless a SMTA one or modified hood. F castings were from 1960 so they would need to be from a 560 if the letter is correct. One problem if a F is on the tank and steering support it would need to be a later replacement part from IH. None were used on a tractor that could work after 1958. Clutch housing is a late enough so it and a gas SM that late used the same housing. Uses a 3 bolt starter. Does it have a diesel starter or other? Does it have a hydraulic unit under fuel tank? Diesel fuel tank will have two line holes in bottom, gas just one. They could use diesel tank by plugging the extra. Could the I be a R missing part of it?
