Amazing speed of replies here. thanks to all of you.
Keith molden: I hadnt thought that the rear wheels could be a bigger concern over the front. Interesting. Shows you how I know little. So would this mean I should consider wider rear tires? I had the same thought about NFE vs WFE, it just seems the supply is very limited for WFE. I do admit that I am putting stock in my emotional want of a beautiful old tractor over feasible function. Its good to see you dont seem concerned about NFE in this soil.
37 Chief: By NFE Im referring to the two small cambered wheels close together rather than two wheels spaced far apart like the rears. NFE is attractive to me for the turning radius, as Ive read many people say navigating these in the woods and in tight spaces is much easier. For mowing I cant see it making much difference NFE or WFE.
FBH44: Yes, I definitely want one with 40-50Hp. 25Hp is too little. Im operating under the assumption that you should buy more than you need currently, as you will find use for it.
Ultradog MN: Ive not heard the flotation term. Thanks. I imagine thats what Im after. Will the NFE and WFW perform/maneuver/handle the same or similar in this soil is the question. Sounds like youre not concerned. Thats good.
Janicholson: sounds like youre also not concerned about the performance of NFE in the sandy loam. Thats good. I understand 300 and 460 coming from the H are not as powerful as the 400. I just have a few of each around me to choose from, but the only WFE is a 460 gas. Seems like M could do a lot according to other posts I've read on here, but maybe not without some mods. I honestly dont care much about making it easy as I really enjoy antiques and I want the immersion of the old tractor work. But I fully understand what you're getting at. When I get to needing to do things more easily for money and time savings I would certainly go for something more modern and streamlined. There is a 560 available near me. Would a 400 be a good choice overall if I could find a good one? I'm going to look at a 460 gas WFE soon. Whatever I buy will be restored or at least well maintained and cared for, as they arent too costly for me.
Ed12345: Thanks for all of this. Also sounds like your take on floatation is the same. Good. When you say you wouldnt want certain models in diesel, why? There are a few MD tractors available around me and I was considering them as a possibility. It has seemed from the beginning that live PTO is what I should get. When youre talking about hydro vs gear youre referring to the actual implement itself being hydraulic or direct gear drive from the PTO, correct? Im not entirely set on having a loader for this first tractor, but obviously it would be immensely helpful. The only hesitation I have about NFE is with a loader. For that I would 100% want WFE.
Im currently in Maryland, preparing to move to Florida. Trying to decide if I should buy a tractor here and trailer it down there or try to find one there. It seems I have a much better selection here in Maryland and PA than I do in FL, but putting a big tractor on a trailer and hauling it 1,000 miles seems silly. Anyone disagree? It seems hard to find something nice where I'm going. Functional and good, sure. But nice and appealing to me, not so easy. Maybe I'm being too picky.

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
