Start in gas and then switch over to diesel. Just more complicated to use. - More to go wrong
Hydrostatic is the type of transmission the tractor has. The 656 came with a 5 speed or with a hydrostatic transmission like many garden tractors. Great transmission except for tillage. You loose 25% of the go to the drawbar. And they dont hold up as well as the gear ones
But for transplanting cabbage, harvesting, loader work you cant beat them
I believe live pto was first available with the super MTA as an option. So you want something newer than that. Id recommend the 666 or 686
Saw some other posts talking about the Ford 5000. It was also a really good tractor and one to consider. The Ford 4000 is also really good as are the older 800 series . Certain 800 power masters came with live PTO. Think it was the 860
Dont think you will go wrong with the fords or IHs
IH was the top dog until the JD new generation tractors. The 4 digest model numbers. IH messed up a little and did come back with the 806 which was a really good tractor that competed well against the 40x0
The JD transmission. Was a big improvement in that era of tractor along with the shifting
For the price the IH or Ford will be hard to beat and think they are just as durable/reliable as the JD
