Harold, I have also just changed regulators without fooling with their fields and they still charged fine at 12 volts with new 12 v regulator. I think the 6 volts have heavier field windings already to handle more field current. Anyway, whatever works and I usually left ground what it was before even if positive. NOTE if he wants to use alternator, I think then he needs to change to negative ground and reverse the ammeter leads. John T
