Antique Bill, As far as I know that debate was over years ago. John Deere and others have recomended detergent oil for years now. What many hear about which was, at one time, a legitimate point, is as follows: After an old tractor used non detergent oil for years, the dirt and gunk would build up around the seal areas (and in bottom of pan) and become sort of a seal in itself preventing leaks. Then, if one suddenly switched to detergent oil, it dissolved that gunk build up and tractors that hadn't previously, would now start to leak. Also, that newly dissolved gunk could plug up or restrict somewhere and possibly cause damage. Therefore, many old timers (rightly so then) warned, never use detergent oil. But the oils are greatly improved now (and so are the seals to withstand detergent additives unlike older seals) and I use multi blend in all my antique rebuilds with never a problem.
