David, Actually, combustion in an internal combustuion engine is more efficient at higher temperatures, so operating at 180 versus 160, it is ever so slightly better, but you would probably never notice any difference. The thermostat is closed to prevent coolant flow until 160 degrees and then it opens (that spring expands and contracts at different temps) and in that operation maintains your temp at approx 160. A closed pressurized cooling system (approximately 15 psi) is to raise the boiling point of the coolant (pv = nrt) but thats strictly the job of the radiator cap, not the thermostat. If I were installing a new tstat anyway, I would go ahead and get the 180, although you may never notice the difference and I say the 160 would not hurt anything. John T in Indiana jmn50@msn.com
