: : I went to my club's anual picknick and tractor meet last weekend . While watching the tractor pulling I couldn't help but wonder why it is , and what kind of person likes the sound of those two cylinder John Deere tractors. I just don't understand how anyone can think that a JD two cylinder idling at 100 RPM ( putt-putt ) sounds good. Compared to the smooth throaty roar of a Farmall for instance, the sound of a two cylinder tractor is like the sound of a flushing toilet. And what's the deal with the horizontal pistons ? Why, its unAmerican . It must be like owning a Subaru only louder. : I agree!! : I once had a JD B that we raked hay with. By the end of the day, that sound gets to you, not to mention the hand clutch that is clumsy not smooth to engage. I like IH tractors, but I think that the best sound from a pulling tractor was an Oliver 88 diesel. They really sound smooth. : I also have to agree. I can not stand the sound of a two cylinder. My dad and I have owned a few Deere's, and they are the most annoying tractor I have ever drove. Considering we own 60 tractors, I think I have driven enough tractors to make an unbiased statement such as this. Personally, we pull a super-stock one-ninety Allis, and for us there is nothing worse than waiting hours to pull because there are so many two bangers in the antique classes.
