The guy at the parts store doesnt have a clue. You must put a resistor in. The voltage regulator has nothing to do with reducing the voltage down to 6v. You could also change the points and all that jazz to 12 volt or if you want to leave all that alone use a 6 volt 1 wire alternator then you dont have to worry about reducing anything. There are several options available when converting from 6v to 12v. You could even convert your original generator to 12v........If your wondering, the difference in a 6v one wire alt. and a 12v. 1 wire alt. is the voltage regulator, 1 is a internal 6v regulator and the other is a 12v internal regulator, other than internal differences they look just alike on the outside, and one workes just as well as the other. When using a 1 wire alt. on a tractor, especially a low rmp tractor to begin with, you have to consider the rpms of the tractor and the alternator. 1 wire alt. excite, or turn on, by means of rpm speed, some 1 wire alt. WILL give trouble "turning on" at low rpms. there are kits available to solve this problem as well. If you have any questions email me. thanks.
