Lennox, All those good old boys below are exactly right and the parts guy is wrong as rain!!!!! The alternators regulator regulates voltage and current going into the battery, but sure not the batterys output which feeds the coil via the ignition switch. If what he said were true, what happens when the starter tries to draw a few hundred amps to start the tractor HUh ?? You have a 6 volt coil, so adding a ballast resistor drops 6 volts across it leaving the same old 6 volts across that 6 volt coil. It also reduces the current through the coil and the contact points. So, dont add one if you want, but the coil will overheat, and it and the points will draw excess current. Theres another minor problem in those GM one wire alternator conversions, and thats if you wire its small exciter wire (thats the number one regulator terminal not the number two field) to your igntion switch like many are wired, turning off your key may not shut off the tractor. (Dave Wickman helped me on this problem) Thats easily cureable by wiring a diode in the circuit and also the old generators idiot light (if it had one) can prevent it because it drops the reverse feedback voltage so the coil doesnt get enough voltage.
