wiring for H

I am going to start replacing some wiring, eventually all of it on my 1940 IH model H tractor. I am wondering what guage of wire is best. It will be run on 6 volt system. I think i read somewhere that 6 volts draws more amps, thus a heavier wire would be better. Any help is appriciated, thanks!
