I've been there tried those things. I gave up on the 8N before I had land. I bought a MF-135 for working 25 acres about 1987. It wasn't until 1997 that it dawned on me that it was too small and too low for good cultivation. So early last year I bought a gas 4020. I figure on getting as much for the 135 as an estate tractor as I paid for the 4020 gas. Though prices in this weeks Farm Bureau paper for 4020 were averaging about $10,000. For that money a 4430 is worth considering. The 4020 has enough ground clearance to cultivate corn standing 2.5 feet tall and enough power to pull three or four plow bottoms through alfalfa. Jd made about a quarter million (half as many as ford made 8N) so there are a lot around. There are other competitive tractors in price and performance, though it took the competition decades to include all the features of the 4020. Mine is NOISY, engine noises, not bad sounding just loud. I think I've located an exhaust manifold gasket leak. When I did my shopping, I found ten 4020 for every alternative within 50 miles of home to select from. And the alternative prices and potential dealerships were generally far away compared to JD.
