Tillers often need a creeper gear not common in farm tractors where the engine runs fast enough to get standard 540 RPM PTO speed for the tiller but moves only .5 mph forward. Most tractors without the creeper gear option move 1.2 to 1.6 mph at PTO speed in first gear. In Iowa soil, I get a seed bed that looks like its been tilled by moldboard plowing fairly fast (5 mph), then disking twice with two bars of spring tooth harrow on the back of the disk. My first pass I did last spring at 6.5 mph with the disk going in to the hubs, the second pass at 8.5 mph really winnowed out the weeds was with the disk going in only 4 to 6 inches. With 3-18 on the plow (behind a 4020) and a 14' disk I covered a lot more territory per hour than you can with a tiller at .5 mph! Gerald
