You might consider using high quality arc welding cable instead of stock or aftermarket battery cables the current carrying capability of welding cable has it all over any cable we've found...we use it on all our machines...including cars.
Another thing to try is running the ground cable directly to the starter if it isn't already...with the current a starter demands it doesn't take much electrical resistance to slow a starter down and especially with a diesel a little extra cranking speed can make all the difference in the world.
