cold weather starting using espar / webasto block heaters

I have a late 70's jd diesel which starts poorly or not at all below 20F. I have tried tank heaters which are ok to about 10 to 0 F (it sits outside - one problem ) but below that its' ether or not at all. I looked into a diesel burning block heater and am purchasing an ESPAR D5W heater, output around 5,000 to 35,000 BTU's.These are used on highway tractors for engine preheating and in boats, rv's etc. I will also try blended synthetic engine oil. ???? Any other suggestions ????
