You're right about every little bit helping. In January of '78 we had a big blizzard here in central Indiana, and then the bottom dropped out of the thermometer. I had a Farmall Super M with a blade on the front and a battery that wasn't any too strong. I tried everything I could think of to keep that thing starting on a daily basis, including wrapping the oil pan with a "heat tape" meant for water pipes, then covering that with duct-tape and fiberglass insulation. I even positioned my daughter's old hair dryer where it would blow hot air on the carb for a few minutes before I'd hit the starter!
