Many JD tractors made and sold before the war sported rubber tires. During the war the manufacturers had to revert to steel because the military had priority for rubber. JD Model A's for example, came with rubber or steel in Ser. Nos. leading up to 488,000 (about 1939). At that serial number, there were many engineering changes in the tractor itself for "new and improved". But many of these later models were available only on steel. After the war, many models of JD received pressed steel frames. I'm sure this change was in pursuit of economies in manufacturing, although it may have also led to greater strength. I have never heard of changes in JD frames being made because of shortages created by the war effort.
