You need a shop manual. A reprint of the original Ford manual is ideal, but I found the I&T manual section on the 5-speed transmission to be adequate. The easiest thing to try is to examine/replace all of the detent plungers and springs. This is not guaranteed to fix any of the problems, but you can do it without splitting the tractor. Basically, the plungers are held by springs in the detent holes in the shift rails and interlock plate to hold the transmission in gear. When the springs get weak/broken, or the plungers get worn out then you can slip out of gear. The plungers and springs can be reached through the four large screws on the left side of the transmission. You shouldn't have to drain the transmission to check the shift rail detents (but I could be wrong). Some problems may be due to worn gears, couplings, or other parts. These transmissions are notorious for problems of this type with 3rd gear because it is the best gear ratio for so many things that it is used a lot more than the other gears. You might be able to see what is wrong from above if you remove the transmission cover (you will get sprayed with oil if you do this while the tractor is running). You will have to split the tractor to change anything besides the detent plungers.
