Sounds to me like the worn pilot bushing and pilot area of the transmission input shaft are allowing the clutch disc to get off-center and drag against the inside edge of the pressure plate mounting flanges or the flywheel. It is also possible the excess friction is originating in the pilot bushing area itself. This situation needs to be corrected. Check the edge of the clutch disc for signs of contact with the PP/flywheel.
