Dan, Im no Ford man and its been years since I worked on any 8N's, but the problem you describe is one Ive seen often. One cause, is that on many tractors and cars, there is an extra wiring terminal post on the mechanical starter buttons or solenoids that basically by passes any ignition ballast resistor ONLY while the starter is engaged. The reason is that while the battery voltage is dragged down by cranking, you temporarily jump around any ballast resistors, therefore, getting more temporary coil current and high output voltage. Then once started, the coil current is agin in series with the ballast resistor which lowers coil current and temperauture and prolongs life of the ignition points and coil. Just something to check on. If the battery voltage is greatly reduced by the starting motor, it can cause too week of an ignition spark. John T Retired Electrical Engineer. PS If that tractor has no such jumper terminal setup, I still suspect too slow timing or points not set properly or maybe a week coil or bad condensor. With an open or bad condensor, your spark plug voltage is way down.
