I've been using a JD 60 Standard tractor with (I believe) 18.4 x 28 rear tires, for 5 or 6 years with a boot in one of the tires. This tractor carries a Sidewinder (heavy duty) mower attached by 3 pt hitch (carried by the tractor). One of its tires has had an opening I could put my fist through all this time, but it was fitted early on with a large boot. I was looking at it the other day and noticed that I was going to soon have to replace the boot. It was showing two layers of ply threads. IF your tire is already old and rotten (many cracks in the rubber), it probably isn't worthwhile to boot it. Otherwise I say patch it. An experienced and trustworthy tire dealer could probably give you good advice. Either way, you're going to have to have him look at the tire.
