Mark, your advice is perfect if you are jumping from one battery to another. But Tom is just spinning the starter with the truck battery. Actually the polarity doesn't matter is this case since the direction of rotation of most starter motors is independent of polarity. Since the starter didn't spin though, either the starter is bad or a connection is dirty (like you said). Be sure to turn the key on too.
