I know what HORSEPOWER is; and I know what Torque is. What I don't know is "What is the difference"? I've asked this question of several fairly knowledgeable people and no one seems to be able to get it through my thick head. (This comes in useful I guess if you want to talk Ford, Dodge and Chevy.) Now days they say you can't just compare the horsepower you have to look at the torque also. I grew up in the fifties and sixties and in those days it was all horsepower that did the work, so thats what I understand. Now days "torque" is where its at. Individually I understand what horsepower is and what torque is. The problem is I keep getting the message that torque can change without horsepower changeing. I'm awful suspicious that they go hand in hand and are simply different quantifications of the same thing- the power output of an engine. For instance; if you have two engines each putting out 400 ft.lbs. of torque, would they not also each be putting out the same horsepower. Would they not each at 400 ft.lbs.be capable of doing the same job. I'm saying that both of these engines are maxed out at 400 ft.lbs. Thats all the work they can do and maintain their revs. What's the difference.
