it works the best at eating rust. does it have a block heater? top it off with water and plug it in. also have heard of people spraying them from the bottom with a pressure washer on high heat. either way expansion and contraction along with a penetrating solvent is the only way to go. you can bend a crank easier then you think. hammering only ensures you will break rings, and ring lands. a good hot pressure washer will get it loose given enough time spent blasting the junk out of the clearance between the piston and wall, above and below the ring area. if your dead set on beating it, get a peice of wood the same size as the piston, as the center of the piston is the weakest point. good luck
