Have seen and installed different types of valve stem protectors, one method is a piece of light guage 2" pipe welded to the rim around the valve stem when the tire is off, about 21/2" high. to take this a step further we use about 2" of 2" nipple/threaded, welded on and a pipe cap put on, this later is done on skidders. 2" pipe allows you to take off the retaining nut with pliers when necessary. Some times, like you say a piece of light flat iron bent in a "u" shape and welded on to the rim will also help. I'm sure there are other ways to protect the valve stem too, hope this helps, have a gooder, R.E.L.
